I was playing “school” today with Lucy and I was the teacher. 📚 🍎 As soon as the role-playing started, we both immediately fell out of character and started laughing as she unpacked her backpack to show me the ridiculous items she brought for this pretend day at school. She pulled out a play wooden snake 🐍 🎨 , half colored in paint from an “early quarantine” craft project. I did my best attempt to get back into character and said, “Lucy! Your parents let you bring a SNAKE to school?! I am going to have to call your mama and tell her about our strict ‘no snake policy’ !” She shrugged her shoulders and without missing a beat said, “well my mama only has been to my school three times for drop-offs so she probably doesn’t know how to get here”.
Gutted. 💔
She looked up at me with tears starting to well in her eyes. Already knowing in her tiny heart the damage that had been done. It’s happened before. And it will happen again. I spent the rest of the morning trying to recover.

The truth is – it’s nearly impossible for me to drop Lucy off at school every day. Her school opens at 8:30am and due to the global nature of my HR role, my calls typically start at 7:30am.
I share this story not for sympathy. Not for a big dramatic pity party. I share it because this is the life of a working mom. These puts and takes. These tiny sacrifices and gut-wrenching moments. Again, that often times don’t make it to the social media highlight reel. I also know stay-at-home parents make similar sacrifices. All we can do is our best.
And I know in my heart I’m a great mom. I may not be there for every school drop-off, but I make up for it in other little ways – like wearing aggressive Halloween pjs from Target that I know will make her smile. 💕🎃✨
